Nikita Parris’ second half strike saw England finish top of Group D at the Women’s European Championships and set up a Quarter Final clash with France.

Mark Sampson made ten changes to the side that beat Spain in matchday two including bringing Izzy Christiansen and Parris into the starting XI while Karen Bardsley, Demi Stokes, Lucy Bronze, Steph Houghton and Jill Scott dropped down to the bench.

England started well and took the lead in the seventh minute when former City striker Toni Duggan capitalised on a defensive mistake to open the scoring.

The lead only lasted ten minutes though as Portugal levelled through Carolina Mendes, who applied the finish from close range.

The Lionesses came out of the blocks firing in the second half and got themselves back in front thanks to Parris.

Christiansen played in the 23-year old, who evaded two challenges before calmly slotting the ball past Patricia Morais to re-establish a one-goal lead.

Sampson’s side managed to see the remainder of the game out without any problems to seal top spot in Group D and set up a clash with France in the Quarter Finals on Sunday 30 July.

Elsewhere in the group, Jane Ross was an unused substitute in Scotland’s 1-0 win against Spain.

Caroline Weir grabbed the only goal of the game just before half time to seal the three points but it wasn’t enough to send them through to the knockout stages.

Our seven Lionesses now progress into the Quarter Finals alongside Kosovare Asllani’s Sweden and Mie Jans’ Denmark.
