Georgia Stanway believes that Manchester City’s 3-0 victory over Sunderland Ladies is a step in the right direction after a disappointing result at the weekend.

The Blues were knocked out of the FA Cup following a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea Ladies in the semi-final stages of the competition but returned to the Women’s Super League fighting.

Stanway struck either side of half-time, before Nadia Nadim headed home in added time to secure the win at the Academy Stadium.

“It feels good, it’s important that we’ve got back to our winning ways and scored three today - which is more that we’ve been doing in recent games,” Stanway explained after the match. “It’s important for us to build our confidence today and we created a lot of chances but it’s about putting them away next time.

“We are on the right track and back where we want to be.”

The 19-year-old has just been nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year alongside team mates Keira Walsh and Ellie Roebuck.

“It’s unbelievable,” the teenager reflected. “A massive thanks to the club and everyone here, and all the players – you can’t do it on your own.

“Also a credit to the other nominees as well, I think it shows the talent in the team with the fact  that three players have been nominated.

“It’s massive on the club and important that we are out here and enjoying it.

“Football has its ups and downs like we’ve seen against reading and seen against Chelsea but we are on the right track.”
