Georgia Stanway’s pivotal piledriver in the 2-2 draw with Chelsea has been shortlisted for the Goal of the Season, while shot-stoppers Ellie Roebuck and Karen Bardsley have been selected in the Save of the Season category.
Stanway struck a sensational equaliser to rescue a point against Emma Hayes’ side, after Nikita Parris had halved a two-goal deficit after the break. With time running out, the game looked to be edging out of City’s grasp but from Jill Scott’s lay-off, Stanway launched a powerful first-time effort into the top corner to keep her side’s title hopes alive.
Roebuck’s moment of magic also arrived against Chelsea. The England Under-19s goalkeeper was thrown at the deep end, introduced after just three minutes as Bardsley suffered an injury. Against the odds, with captain Steph Houghton also forced off, ’s side battled valiantly to preserve a precious point with Roebuck producing a stunning save with her outstretched foot to deny Drew Spence a late winner with the goal at her mercy.
Bardsley’s equally splendid save occurred in the early stages of City’s trip to Arsenal. The England number one had to be at full stretch to superbly tip Jordan Nobbs’ excellent strike over the crossbar to preserve deadlock before the visitors opened the scoring minutes later through Nadia Nadim.
