The Blues put on a superb defensive display to keep Emma Hayes’ side at bay in the FA WSL opener away at the Kingsmeadow.
Gemma Bonner, usually a central defender, played at right-back during the clash and impressed the boss with her fine performance.

“Gemma has been brilliant,” Nick explained after the match. “To task a 27-year-old who has played centre-half and captained her side for seven years to play at right back against – potentially – the best winger in the world is a credit to her as a person.
“I also thought Jen [Beattie] and Steph [Houghton] were exceptional today as well. The whole back four contained Chelsea, and they were very lively on the attack too.”
Speaking about the game, the manager is adamant that his side can do better as the season progresses.
“We always know it’s going to be a difficult game when we come to the Kingsmeadow.” Nick added. “It’s really close as it’s two top teams who want to win the league.
“It was a difficult game today and our performance was good but we can do better. It’s only the first game of the season so we’ve got time to get into our rhythm.
“We don’t express this to the players because we want the players to come here hungry for the three points, but for us it is a ‘not lose’ game, and we have achieved that.
“At the end of a game like this you always review it and think that maybe we missed a few chances to potentially score. But we are happy not to lose today.”
Next, City travel to Spain to take on Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 32.
