The City boss opted for a back three consisting of Jen Beattie, Steph Houghton and Gemma Bonner as the Blues went on to secure a 3-0 win over the Vixens at the Stoke Gifford Stadium.
Speaking about his side’s Continental Cup performance, Cushing praised the trio for their defensive efforts in the opening games of the season.

“I think we’ve got the best three central defenders in Britain here,” Cushing stated. “They showed that with another clean sheet and a dominant performance.
“It was another dominant performance from Jen Beattie and Steph Houghton against Bristol.
“Then there’s Gemma Bonner who continues to work hard, keeps improving and is showing us what a good player she is.
“It gives us versatility but it’s the clean sheets we are really pleased with.”
The manager was delighted with how the players performed despite their busy travelling schedule.
“We knew it was going be a difficult game and we knew Bristol would sit 11 behind the ball and make it hard for us,” Nick added. “We just had to make sure we didn’t get frustrated and remained patient.
“To win the game 3-0 after a very difficult week is a real plus for us.
“I can’t praise the players enough - the way that they’ve applied themselves after a lot of travelling and two very difficult games against Chelsea and Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
“To come here and put in a real dominant performance, to win and keep a clean sheet, I’m really pleased with that.”
Next, Nick Cushing’s side travel to Everton in the FA WSL on Thursday 20 September before meeting Bristol again at the weekend.
