Lauren Hemp believes City showed our true colours in the 7-1 Continental Cup thrashing of Brighton and Hove Albion.

The youngster netted her second and third goals in sky blue, as the Blues ran riot to clinch a place in the semi-finals for the third successive year.

A late flurry of goals - four in the final five minutes - capped a thoroughly dominant display and Hemp was delighted to see her side showcase our ruthless side.

“I’m absolutely over the moon,” she told mancity.com. “It was a massive performance.

“The squad showed what we’re made of, especially in the second half.

“We were ruthless. We put the game to bed and made sure we got the result we needed.

“It was a case of keeping our heads, keep playing the way we were and looking after the ball, getting it into the final third for us to finish.

“I’m delighted to have scored but it was a massive team performance, which helped to put us through to the next round of the cup.”

With either Chelsea, Arsenal or Manchester United lying in wait, Hemp was asked whether she favoured any potential opponents – but remained coy.

“Any of them will give it a good go,” she stated. “We’re definitely capable of winning.

“We just need to turn up on the day. We can beat any team that comes up in front of us.”

Hemp added the triumph served as a welcome confidence boost, ahead of the Blues’ return to league action on Sunday.

Nick Cushing’s side were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw last time out at Bristol but the youngster asserts the manner of Thursday’s victory provided a timely tonic.

“It’s definitely upped our confidence,” she declared. “On Friday, we’ll get back in training, working hard.

“We’re now looking back to the league and we want a return to winning ways.

“We have a big squad, which means there are a lot of fresh legs. We’re all competing for places, working as hard as we can to get wins for the team.”
