However, Les Bleus’ coach Corinne Diacre is playing down her team’s hopes, perhaps mindful over not burdening the players with the hopes of a nation.

“We did what we had to do,” she said. “We’re still outsiders for the tournament.

“We found some difficulties here and this match shows it. The World Cup is very complex.

“Little by little, along the way - that’s when you become the favourite”

Meanwhile, Keira Walsh featured on the Lionesses Daily show on the official Twitter account of England Women.

The City midfielder spoke of how having her parents in France has helped her settle into World Cup life quicker than she thought she might.

“I don’t think I ever got a chance to come to a tournament when I was younger, so it’s great to be here and to have my mum and dad here as well is fantastic,” she said.

“This isn’t only my first World Cup, it’s my first tournament and when I saw my parents over here for the first time, they were having an argument about who was wearing which England shirt!

“I looked for them when I walked out for our first game and it tool my mind off things and calmed my nerves so them being here helped me a lot.”

Today’s games see Australia take on Brazil and South Africa play China.

Both Brazil won their first game, while South Africa, China and Australia lost their opening fixture and will need to pick up something from their second matches.
