The opening Group D clash in the 2019 Women’s World Cup between England and Scotland saw Manchester City colleagues Jill Scott and Caroline Weir become the best of enemies for 90 minutes.

And as our image of the day from the showpiece in France illustrates, no quarter was asked or given as the pair sought to gain the upper hand during the clash in Nice.

A host of City players were in action with Karen Bardsley, Steph Houghton and Keira Walsh also among those involved.

Ultimately it was Scott and England who prevailed, Phil Neville’s Lionesses getting their campaign off to a flying start with a 2-1 win.

New City signing Ellen White and former City star Nikita Parris (penalty) were both on the score-sheet for England in the first half.

But the Scots staged a second half fightback with another former City star, Claire Emslie, finding the target on 79 minutes to set up a thrilling finale.
