With both sides assured of a place in the last 16, Canada versus the Netherlands should have been one of the more straightforward final group stage games at the Women’s World Cup.

It took just 58 seconds for the opposite to transpire.

Janine Beckie was the Manchester City player involved and pictured here, it was her duel with Desiree van Lunteren that conjured up the moment of drama.

The City forward looked to have stolen a yard on the Dutch defender, but a slight collision sent her to the floor.

The whistle rang and a penalty was awarded. The fastest at this year’s World Cup.

A long delay followed, with Christine Sinclair made to wait to take the kick while referee Stéphanie Frappart consulted the video-assistant referees.

Eventually, she took the opportunity to watch it back herself and ruled the foul had taken place just outside the box, with Beckie’s momentum taking her into the area.

It was the finest of margins, but it was enough of a let-off for the Dutch, who went on to win the game and secure top spot in Group E thanks to goals from Anouk Dekker and Lineth Beerensteyn.

Sinclair was on target for Canada, who needed to take three points if they were to emerge as group winners.

Beckie and her team-mates will now face either the United States or Sweden in the last 16.
