Georgia Stanway is hoping England can leave a legacy at the World Cup this summer.

The Manchester City youngster is part of the 23-player squad heading to France, for what will be her first major senior tournament and joined up with the Lionesses earlier this week.

She played an hour in the first pre-tournament friendly as Phil Neville’s side beat Denmark 2-0 and says England travel to France ready to make an impact.

“The mood in the camp is good,” she explained.

“We are just excited to get it started now. We’re looking forward to hitting the ground running and kicking off.”

Continuing where she left off may be a more apt way of looking at the tournament for Stanway, who shone at last summer’s U20 World Cup, where she finished as top scorer.

The 20-year-old’s current form isn’t bad either.

Fresh off the back of a double cup winning season and having scored in the FA Cup final victory at Wembley, the City midfielder has earned herself a reputation as one of the game’s most exciting prospects.

Now, Stanway wants that success to translate at international level so the Lionesses can inspire a new generation of fans and players, like their male counterparts did last summer.

“As long as we show who we are we can hopefully get more fans watching. We need as many fans as possible going into the World Cup.

“The men [reaching the semi-finals at their World Cup in Russia last summer] boomed so hopefully we can follow on from that.”

“People are engaging in the women’s game. Hopefully us winning games shows who England are.

“If we can inspire one girl, that’s enough. If we can inspire 10,000, that’s even bigger.

“We’ll go out and do our best.”

England’s final warm-up game is against New Zealand on Saturday 1 June, before the World Cup opener against Scotland eight days later.
