Gemma Bonner has hailed the resilience and steel of City’s mean machine of a defence in the wake of our impeccable start to the season.

From the first six games of the 2019/20 campaign, spread across three competitions, Nick Cushing’s side have conceded just one goal.

That remarkable statistic bears testament to the ability and defensive acumen of centre half Bonner and her back-line colleagues.

And, as City prepare to resume FA Women’s Super League action at home to Birmingham on Saturday, the England international revealed the shut-outs were a source of huge pride to the squad.

“Something we always pride ourselves on is keeping clean sheets,” Bonner declared.

“We’re getting more and more understanding with each other as the games come.

“If we keep clean sheets, then we know we’ve got the fire power and the quality within the team to score goals and win games

“So, if we can do our job at the back and keep clean sheets then it always gives us a half a chance.”

Three straight wins in the Super League have left City equal top of the table with defending champions Arsenal.

And Bonner said lessons from last season’s campaign which saw us pipped to the crown by the Gunners were helping to fuel the squad’s desire and determination to secure what would be a third league title.

“It has been a great start and we definitely want to continue unbeaten,” Bonner added.

“Last year we did it all the way until the last game of the season but, along the way, we dropped a few points which we were disappointed with and which eventually caught up with us.

“For us, we want to turn those draws of last season into wins and I think it showed in our performance at Reading where we have previously struggled.

“It was good to put that convincing performance in and win there – especially so early in the campaign.

“Now, we want to keep pushing on in the league and hopefully we can go one better this season.”

City are next in action with the FA WSL visit of Birmingham to the Academy Stadium on Saturday 12 October (2pm). Tickets for all home games are on sale online and at the Etihad Stadium Ticket Office.
