Lyon are next up, with Pep Guardiola’s side looking to progress to the semi-finals for only the second time.
Here are the stats behind our UCL campaign to date…
Games
City have played eight UCL matches so far and are unbeaten in all of them, winning six and drawing twice.
The journey began with a 3-0 victory away to Shakhtar Donetsk, and a fortnight later, Dinamo Zagreb were beaten 2-0 at the Etihad.
A lively Atalanta arrived at the Etihad next and City had to come from behind to register a comprehensive 5-1 over the Italians to preserve a 100% record and place one foot firmly in the Round of 16.
Atalanta proved stiffer opposition on their own patch, forcing a 1-1 draw and regaining some of their pride to take a first ever UCL point – as well as keeping their own slim hopes of qualifying alive.
City were far from their best in Matchday 5, as Shakhtar returned to the Ukraine having drawn 1-1 at the Etihad.

It was a point, however, that ensured City qualified as group winners.
The final group stage clash was a 4-1 away win over Dinamo Zagreb, on a night when Atalanta stunned Shakhtar with a 3-0 win in Ukraine to leapfrog from bottom to second spot and into the last 16 – an incredible turnaround by the Serie A side.
The Round of 16 saw City record a famous 2-1 over Real Madrid at the Bernabeu – perhaps our biggest UCL victory on the road yet – and after a five-month wait for the second leg, Guardiola’s side finished the job with a 2-1 win at the Etihad.
Goals scored
So far, City have scored 20 goals in the UCL, conceding six.
Our top scorers are Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus – both have six goals and have scored one hat-trick each.
The pair are tied for third as Champions League top scorers for 2019/20, though trail Bayern Munch’s Robert Lewandowski who has 13 to date, and Erling Haaland who has 10.
The other eight City goals scored have been shared between Ilkay Gundogan, Sergio Aguero and Phil Foden (two each) while Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez have one goal apiece.
Interestingly, City have come from behind three times to win in the current UCL run – against Atalanta, Zagreb and Real Madrid.
Possession
Over the eight ties played, City average 60% possession.
The most was 73% at home to Dinamo Zagreb, while Shakhtar Donetsk shared 50% in Ukraine.
Over our two legs with Real Madrid, the possession was 52% to 48% in City’s favour.
Attempts on goal
City have averaged more than 16 shots per game in the eight UCL games played with a peak of 21 against Real Madrid last Friday.
In total, City have had 129 attempts on goal in eight games, with 57 of those efforts on target and 24 resulting in a goal.
We average 7.125 shots in target per game so far.
City have also struck the woodwork three times in the current UCL campaign.
Appearances
Only three players have featured in every UCL game so far – Raheem Sterling, Ilkay Gundogan and Nicolas Otamendi have all played eight times, whether from the start or off the bench.
Assists
Riyad Mahrez tops City’s UCL assists charts with four – he is also tied at the top of the UCL assists charts with Kylian Mbappe and Hikem Ziyech – though Mahrez has played more minutes than the other two.
