Elite Development Squad youngster Alex Robertson achieved a childhood dream earlier today when he won his first senior cap for Australia.

The 19-year-old midfielder followed in the proud footsteps of his father and grandfather when he came on as a second half substitute in the Socceroos’ 3-1 friendly win over Ecuador in Sydney.

Robertson came on in the 63rd minute to emulate his father Mark and grandfather Alex who both also represented the Socceroos.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Robertson admitted just to be selected for his first senior Australian squad had been a special moment in his fledgling career.

“To be called up to my home country is something special,” Robertson said.

“I’ve dreamt of it since I was a kid and for it to come true is something really special and I’m just really looking forward to getting out there and playing in the games.

“I feel like I’ve been doing well this season and I’ve been in contact with Australia for quite some time now, and the manager himself.

“But didn’t know when (I would be called up), so it was a little bit of a surprise but I’m doing well and hopefully that had a part to play in it.”

Robertson’s call-up followed a series of outstanding displays for City’s EDS side with the Under-21s in with a great shout of securing what would be an unprecedented third PL2 title in a row.

With six games of the season to go, City are a point clear of Chelsea at the top of the table and have two games in hand on the Londoners.

And Robertson says there is a sense of excitement as the season approaches its crucial final furlong.

“Yeah for sure, getting it (the title) over the line would be good,” Robertson added.

“I’ve won it before two seasons ago, the lads won it last season and a few of the younger lads haven’t won it - so for us older lads if we can try and help them do that, it’d be good. It’d be something exciting for them.

“The title race is heating up and hopefully we can keep going strong, push through and win it.”

Ahead of Robertson’s departure to link up with the Australian squad we took Alex into the city centre and the Etihad for a special photo shoot.
