Julian Alvarez received a hero’s welcome from players and staff as he returned to the CFA this past week – and Saturday offered a chance for our supporters to hail the new World Cup winner.

Alvarez was on the winning team in Qatar 2022 as Argentina lifted their third World Cup trophy after beating France on penalties in an epic final.

Their 2022 triumph followed victories in 1978 and 1986 as they moved fourth in the all-time list behind Italy and Germany (both four) and Brazil (five).

Our forward scored four goals in the 2022 tournament and received plaudits for his performances alongside Lionel Messi.

Ahead of kick-off against Everton on New Year’s Eve, Alvarez was introduced to the Etihad Stadium crowd who roared their approval.

It was somewhat fitting as Alvarez strode on to the pitch wearing his winner’s medal, that a giant Argentina flag was proudly being waved over in the South Stand.

It was a wonderful moment and one that the player will undoubtedly remember for a long time to come.
