It was a comfortable evening’s work on the artificial surface at the Estadi Nacional as Gareth Southgate’s side retained top spot in Group I, lying four points clear of second placed Albania.

Foden proved an irrepressible force in midfield while Ben Chilwell, Bukayo Saka, Tammy Abraham, James Ward-Prowse and Grealish were all on target.

The match also saw history made for the Three Lions with Ukraine’s Kateryna Monzul becoming the first woman to referee an England senior game

There was no lack of perspiration from the minnows, but all the inspiration was provided by the Three Lions with Foden once again reminding everyone why the City Academy graduate is regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in the English game with a superb display.

Foden it was who helped set up England’s 17th minute opener, his arcing pass finding Jadon Sancho whose cushioned assist gave Chilwell the time and space to hammer home the opener, one that was awarded after a lengthy VAR check.

Foden then provided a wonderful assist on 38 minutes as Saka doubled England’s lead.

The City man’s exquisite 25-yard left-foot pass found the onrushing Saka on the right side of the box with the Arsenal youngster thumping home from close range.

England’s dominance was further emphasised when Tammy Abraham extended the lead just before the hour mark, the Roma striker stealing in to meet Sancho’s inviting cross with Stones then making way for Fikayo Tomori.

City’s Jack Grealish then came on as a 74th minute replacement and instantly made his presence felt with the winger almost immediately being brought down in the box.

Referee Monzul pointed to the spot and though Ward-Prowse saw his penalty saved by Andorran keeper Josep Gomes, the Southampton man despatched the rebound.

Grealish then capped a fine night’s work for the Three Lions by registering his first England goal – from an assist by keeper Sam Johnstone!

The West Brom shot-stopper launched a huge throw upfield which found Grealish who created space before finishing with a low shot.

England are next in action on Tuesday when they play host to Hungary.

Elsewhere, Bernardo Silva came on as a second half substitute as Portugal beat Qatar 3-0 in a friendly at the Estadio Algarve.

Cristian Ronaldo struck his 112th international goal to give Portugal a first half lead before second half efforts from Jose Fonte and Andre Silva sealed the victory.
