Semenyo has joined the Club from fellow Premier League side AFC Bournemouth on a deal that runs until the summer of 2031.
The Ghana international has been one of the standout players in the 2025/26 campaign, with only new team-mate Erling Haaland and Brentford’s Igor Thiago bettering his tally of ten goals so far in the Premier League.
The No.42 has personal significance for Semenyo, given it was his first number at Bristol City, where he made his senior debut as an 18-year-old in May 2018.
He went on to feature 125 times for the Robins before moving to Bournemouth in January 2023.
The most prominent wearer of the No.42 shirt in City’s history is undoubtedly Yaya Toure. The Ivorian midfielder spent eight seasons at City, winning three Premier League titles, three League Cups and an FA Cup.
Semenyo, 26, previously wore the number 24 during his three years at Bournemouth, but that is currently occupied by Josko Gvardiol.
“It was my first number at Bristol City when I first signed and that always stuck with me,” Semenyo says.

“It was either 42 or 24, and 24 wasn’t available so I went back to my first number. That was the inspiration behind it.”
The Ghana international becomes City’s first signing of the 2026 January transfer window as Pep Guardiola adds to his squad ahead of the final stretch of the 2025/26 campaign.
