Second half strikes from Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden and Aymeric Laporte plus an early Gabriel Jesus header helped City book their place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a dominant 4-1 win over Arsenal.

City were off to a lightning start in the capital when Jesus stole a yard between Shkodran Mustafi and Gabriel to head home Oleksandr Zinchenko’s near-post ball inside 3 minutes.

But the hosts hauled themselves level against the run of play just after the half hour, when Alexandre Lacazette headed home from a Gabriel Martinelli cutback.

City were not phased by the setback and could well have regained their lead before the break when Mahrez and Jesus combined to send the Brazilian clean through, but Arsenal stopper Rúnar Rúnarsson got down well to deny the forward his second of the game.

We continued to press for the advantage in the second half and were rewarded when Mahrez’s free-kick was too hot to handle for Rúnarsson, who fumbled the Algerian’s 54th-minute effort into his own net.

And the Icelander was picking the ball out of his goal once again five minutes later when Foden latched on to Fernandinho’s through ball and expertly lofted the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper.

Foden then switched from scorer to provider in the 72nd minute, floating an inviting ball into a dangerous area from the right that was duly dispatched by Laporte.
