The first ten minutes promised a far more open affair than the first-leg, with Atleti pressing high against City’s ranks, but they soon had to retreat to their familiar defensive set-up once we found our rhythm in the Spanish capital.
The best chance of the first half fell to us, when Phil Foden found Ilkay Gundogan inside the area, but the midfielder’s strike found the bottom of the post as we went into half-time goalless.
Atletico turned up the heat in the second half, throwing bodies forward in search of a way back into the tie, but we continued to hold strong and restrict any efforts on Ederson‘s goal.
The host’s best chance fell to Matheus Cunha, whose close range shot was brilliantly blocked by John Stones.
The City players had to keep their heads in the closing stages, as Felipe was sent-off for a second tackle on Phil Foden, before Ederson was called into action during stoppage time to punch away a dangerous free-kick and a late chance for Angel Correa.
In the end, City were able to demonstrate their discipline and restraint to see off the Atletico challenge, advancing to a blockbuster semi-final showdown with Real Madrid.
