The Spaniard headed home a second half equaliser at St Mary’s as Guardiola’s men earned a hard-fought point on the south coast.
Although Ralph Hassenhuttl’s side prevent City from registering a 13th successive Premier League victory, the 1-1 draw extended our unbeaten run to nine matches in all competitions.
And while Laporte would have preferred all three points, he was pleased by both the team’s display and to contribute with a goal of his own.
He reflected: “I am very happy because of the goal, and I think we have to stay like we have done in the last few weeks, playing how we are playing because we are playing really good football, and this is our target.
“I always enjoy scoring because when you are a defender, if you do a mistake then it is your fault.
“No one is behind you apart from the goalkeeper so it is one against one and you can be the one being pointed at.
“It is good for us and something I enjoyed because sometimes it is not the forwards [that score], tonight it is me, so I am happy with that.
“I would prefer to have won the game though. It is never easy, but we have to improve.
“Now we have a few days off so we will rest a little bit and go again.”
Despite Pep Guardiola’s men coming away from St Mary’s with 74% possession and 20 shots on goal, the hosts held firm to bring an end to our incredible winning sequence.
And while Laporte feels a City victory would have been a fair outcome, he also acknowledged the efforts of Southampton to make life difficult for us.
“They have good players and they know how to play us. They (did) a great job,” he said.
“They ran a lot and at the beginning of the game we were struggling a little bit.
“But at the end, I think we managed the game a bit better.”
