After a brief spell of thunder and lightning, the clash of two European giants got underway at the Camping World Stadium.
Both teams took to the pitch with a blend of first-team, experienced players and up-and-coming Academy prospects with both teams impacted by the recent EUROs.
City started strong, holding possession for the opening stages but newly-appointed Hansi Flick saw his side quickly grow into the game.
And it was the La Liga side who took the lead on 24 minutes through a Pau Victor strike.
City looked inspired by going a goal down and after relentless attacks at the Barcelona goal, it was Nico O’Reilly who drew City level.
A stunning through ball by Josko Gvardiol put the Elite Development Squad player through on goal in the 39th minute and the 19-year-old pulled off a composed left-footed finish.

But, with the final kick of the opening 45 minutes, City’s opponents re-took the lead with a Pablo Torres goal after clever link-up play by Barcelona.
15 minutes into the second half, a brilliant solo run by Mateo Kovacic split open Barcelona’s defence. The Croatian played a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Jack Grealish who buried the ball into the top right corner to bring City back level.
Neither team could find a winning goal so the game went straight to a penalty shoot-out to decide a winner.
Barcelona came out triumphant with a 4-1 shoot-out triumph.
