Benjamin Mendy says Manchester City must produce a champion’s performance against newly crowned Premier League winners, Liverpool.

Pep Guardiola confirmed City will give the Reds a guard of honour when they visit the Etihad Stadium on Thursday and Mendy has called on his team-mates to deliver a timely reminder of our own credentials, with a display that recaptures our best form.

“What they are doing is incredible,” he said, in tribute to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

“In the game against them we need to show them that we won the title two times and we want to beat them.

“It will be a good game for us and them to.”

Though the league has gone, City are still in the hunt for the FA Cup and Champions League.

Victory in both would ensure the 2019/20 campaign ended a huge success and for Mendy, it would be a major source of personal pride.

The Frenchman has endured the frustration of watching from the touchline as City swept all before them domestically over the last two seasons, during which he was plagued by injury.

It made him a peripheral figure in our back to back Premier League victories, whilst he is yet to appear in a cup final for the Club, having been an unused substitute in our Carabao Cup victory over Aston Villa in March.

For him, therefore, the celebrations of our last eight trophies have not been quite as earnest and he is determined to repay the support of Guardiola, his staff and team-mates by playing an active role in any future success.

“When he [Pep] said he missed me I am always happy,” Mendy added. “It is something very good and it touched me.

“I want to show him, I think he knows, but I want to show Manchester City and the world.

“First Manchester City, because it is my team and I love this team and give everything for them because they deserve that for what they did for me for two years, while winning the cups and titles.

“I played a few games, but honestly, you win and I don’t feel the same. I am happy, but I don’t feel the same.

“I want to fight and say I helped my team win this trophy.”
