Bernardo Silva has called on Manchester City to learn from the mistakes which contributed to our 2-0 derby defeat to Manchester United.

The Portuguese midfielder says the defending Premier League champions must review the performance at Old Trafford and correct what went wrong to ensure we do not lose any more games this season.

Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession, Pep Guardiola’s side rarely tested David De Gea in the United goal, with Anthony Martial’s first half strike and Scott McTominay’s goal in the final minute consigning us to a seventh league defeat of the campaign.

“We didn’t start badly and were playing quite well until we conceded,” said Bernardo afterwards.

“We know how good the Manchester United players are on the counter-attack, very aggressive. We will have to watch the game back and listen to what Pep has to say.

“Now it’s too close to know what was lacking. But a team like ours cannot lose as many games as we have lost so far this season.

“We need to check what’s not going right and try not to make so many mistakes.”

City fell behind when Martial volleyed home from Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick, awarded by Mike Dean after Ilkay Gundogan tangled with United’s No.18.

The decision drew the frustrations of the boys in blue and though Bernardo felt it wasn’t a foul, he acknowledged that we must accept such things happen in football and reiterated Guardiola’s recent message that we must focus on securing European football next season.

“From my point of view and from where I was, it was clear it was not a foul,” he added.

“The referee, like all the players, can make mistakes. It is football. It is what it is.

“The reality is that in the Premier League we don’t have much pressure, because we know our position is not changing a lot because we won’t get to the title.

“I think we will be second to qualify for the Champions League.”
