Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva both started Portugal's 4-0 friendly win over Nigeria at Sporting CP's Estadio Jose Alvalade on Thursday night.

Both players were substituted at half-time with Portugal already two goals up in a match that completed their preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which starts this Sunday.

Dias was joined at the back by Benfica youngster Antonio Silva while Bernardo played in midfield alongside Real Betis’ William Carvalho, Porto man Otavio and Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes.

It was Fernandes who scored the first two goals, including one from the penalty spot.

Young Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos added a third in the 82nd minute before his Club team-mate Joao Mario completed the scoring a couple of minutes later.

Joao Cancelo was not used by Fernando Santos but will be hoping to get the nod when the nation begins their World Cup campaign against Ghana on Thursday 24 November.

They will also face Uruguay and South Korea as they seek to progress from Group H and reach the Round of 16, the stage at which they were eliminated in 2018.

The nation’s best ever finish was third place at the 1966 tournament hosted and won by England.

Earlier today, Aymeric Laporte and Rodrigo both featured as Spain beat Jordan 3-1 in their final match before the World Cup.
