Sterling fired home the opener from 10-yards after being picked out with a good ball from Benjamin Mendy and City’s second came down the same flank when Torres cut back for City’s No.7 to score from close range.

The Spaniard looked lively throughout and when Riyad Mahrez’ through ball put him clear of the Burnley defence, he calmly curled the ball into the bottom corner to get up and running in a City shirt.

It was a good night’s work for Pep Guardiola’s side, who saw 18-year-old Cole Palmer make his debut and also welcomed back Bernardo Silva from injury.
