City Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak says the Club’s focus now is trained on the summer and seeking to further reinforce and strengthen an already world-class playing squad.

Global attention will inevitably be dominated by the 2026 World Cup finals with a host of City players taking part in the showpiece which gets under way later this month in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

However, the Chairman said the onset of the World Cup would not deflect from the ongoing work and focus of Director of Football Hugo Viana.

And he said, as with last January’s hugely successful transfer window, City would move swiftly, smartly and efficiently when required across this summer’s window.

“No, I don’t think it [the World Cup] makes it more or less complicated. I think it’s part of the game. We know how to deal with it, Hugo knows how to deal with it,” Khaldoon pointed out.

“We know what we want, we know what we need and we know how to go about it.

“Don’t forget that in January we made two very important signings.

“Big credit to Hugo in being able to identify the needs and then move on two top talents, Marc Guéhi and Antoine Semenyo.

“So, we’re very happy with them joining in January. These two would have been two typical summer moves, given the size of the transfer fees and the importance of the players.

“And as we’ve always shown, and I think this is important always to know this Club, we are organised, we are thoughtful and sometimes when we need to be decisive and pre-emptive, we will do that and that’s exactly what we did in these two cases.

“I think in the summer, we know exactly what we want to do, we know exactly who we are targeting and I promise you, as always, we’ll go about our business and be as efficient, [and] as swift as possible.”

One player who made the move to the Etihad last summer and impressed in his debut season was Rayan Cherki.

The French international scored 10 times and provided 15 assists in an exciting first term in England.

Still only 22, the Chairman says everyone at City knew of Cherki’s promise.

He also insisted that the attacking midfielder has benefitted from coming into a squad packed with ability.

“We had a high conviction that Rayan [Cherki] had the potential to be quite a special player,” he said.

“And I remind you; he’s still a young man. But as this team grows and you look at the team today beyond Rayan, with the strong talent from top to bottom, from Erling [Haaland], Rodri, [Antoine] Semenyo, Jeremy Doku who has been phenomenal this season, [Abdukodir] Khusanov extraordinary, Nico O’Reilly, [Gianluigi] Donnarumma.

“In every position we have very talented young players and with the depth of experience of players like Rodri as an example, I mean, we really have quite a team.”
