Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden netted for City in a pulsating 2-1 Champions League quarter final first leg victory over Borussia Dortmund at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola‘s side were put on the back foot early on by the visitors who forced Ederson into a save from Jude Bellingham’s shot, with the Brazilian parrying the effort to safety.

However, City regained confidence with some neat possession and pounced on the first mistake made by the German side.

Emre Can’s loose pass in midfield was intercepted and City broke at pace, led by skipper De Bruyne, who blasted in an accurate cutback from Riyad Mahrez after 19 minutes.

Can was at the centre of attention again as he was judged to have caught Rodrigo in the face with his boot inside the box, but Ovidiu Hategan reviewed the decision on the field and overturned the spot-kick.

The Romanian referee had another big decision to make shortly before the interval as Bellingham pinched the ball from Ederson and tapped into an empty net, but fortunately for City, the referee blew his whistle for a foul on the goalkeeper.

The first chance of the second period fell to Dortmund’s Erling Haaland, who raced past Ruben Dias but had his shot smothered expertly by Ederson.

Just after the hour mark, Guardiola‘s men had a golden chance to double the lead. De Bruyne superbly evaded his man on the right flank and accurately squared the ball to Foden, whose well-directed effort from eight yards was saved by Marwin Hitz.

With just under 15 minutes remaining, De Bruyne and Foden went close in quick succession, with the Belgian dragging his shot just wide from 20 yards, before Foden‘s effort was once again saved by Hitz.

The visitors finally managed to breach City’s rigid backline after 84 minutes, with Haaland playing in Reus who coolly slotted beyond Ederson, the first goal Guardiola‘s side has conceded in this season’s competition since gameweek one against Porto.

With the clock ticking towards stoppage time, Foden got the goal that his performance deserved, passing into the net from Gundogan‘s neat lay-off after a superb De Bruyne cross.

The sides meet again for the second leg next Wednesday!
