City were held to a goalless draw by a determined, organised and rigid Inter Milan in our 2024/25 UEFA Champions League opener at the Etihad Stadium.

The league phase began for Pep Guardiola‘s men against fellow 2022/23 Champions League finalists Inter, with 50,922 spectators eagerly watching on under the floodlights at the Etihad.

Chances were at a premium in the first half, with Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland going close, whilst Marcus Thuram and Carlos Augusto threatened for the visitors.

It was a similarly cagey and tight affair after the interval, but substitutes Ilkay Gundogan and Phil Foden combined well just after the hour mark, however, Foden’s right-footed shot from 12 yards was straight into the chest of goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

The attacking intensity increased from the home side, donned in the new ‘Definitely City’ kit, with Josko Gvardiol next to strike on target, stinging the palms of Sommer with a powerful drive from 20 yards.

Gundogan had the golden chances to claim all three points, connecting with Gvardiol’s cross but heading straight into the arms of Sommer from six yards, before again heading over deep into stoppage time.

Neither side could find the decisive goal, meaning each emerge with a point from the first game of the league phase.
