Pep Guardiola’s men came into the match on the back of Wednesday night’s UEFA Super Cup win against Sevilla in Athens, but that did not affect the pace of the game.
And on the 31 minute mark, they got their just reward after probing the Newcastle defence.
Julian Alvarez picked up the ball, and from 20 yards out, he struck the ball sweetly into the top left corner of the net. The shot beat Nick Pope with pace and City were 1-0 up.
Newcastle pushed for a leveller after the break but City had good chances, too, with Erling Haaland unlucky not to double the lead as the second half progressed.
Despite several efforts to put the game to bed, City still held out for a 1-0 victory in the first outing at the Etihad for the new campaign.
