Manchester City ended Boxing Day in perfect fashion, beating Newcastle United 2-0 in the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium thanks to goals from Ilkay Gundogan and Ferran Torres.

The victory takes City to 12 successive league home victories over the Magpies, extending our club record of consecutive wins against a top-flight opponent.

Pep Guardiola‘s men began in confident fashion in the heavy rain at the Etihad Stadium and made the early pressure count, taking the lead in the 14th minute after Gundogan‘s calm finish from Raheem Sterling‘s cut-back.

The assist took the Englishman’s goal involvement tally under Guardiola to 150, the first player to reach that mark at the Club under the Spaniard.

The hosts kept our foot on the pedal and almost made it two, with De Bruyne forcing Karl Darlow to scramble back and tip the ball away from a mis-hit cross that was dipping under the crossbar.

The two came face to face again later in the half, with Darlow smothering De Bruyne‘s effort after the Belgian was put through expertly by Ferran Torres.

We emerged from the interval with a similar attacking intensity and Torres doubled the lead in the 55th minute, firing into the bottom corner after Joao Cancelo’s cross was only half cleared.

Bernardo almost made it three, but his effort from a narrow angle cannoned back off the post.  Sergio Aguero emerged from the bench and almost got his name on the scoresheet, but Darlow expertly denied the Argentine.

City professionally saw out the remaining minutes, claiming all three points and moving up to fifth place!
