Erling Haaland's five goals, Ilkay Gundogan's accurate strike and a stunning Kevin de Bruyne effort propelled us into the last eight of the UEFA Champions League with a 7-0 (8-1 agg) victory over RB Leipzig.

After an electric pre-match light show at the Etihad Stadium, Pep Guardiola‘s men transferred the jolting feeling onto the pitch with an exhilarating start to the game.

Haaland stroked into the bottom corner from the penalty spot to open the scoring after 22 minutes, before adding a dramatic second goal just two minutes later, heading into an empty net after Kevin de Bruyne‘s strike cannoned off the crossbar.

Just seconds before the interval, the Norwegian claimed his fifth hat-trick of the season and 37th goal across all competitions, prodding in from the goal-line after Ruben Dias‘ header struck the inside of the post into his path.

We maintained the attacking intensity after the interval and added a superb fourth goal, with skipper Gundogan finishing off a lovely team move but striking into the bottom right corner with his left foot.

Our number nine then blasted in his fourth of the night after 53 minutes, reacting quickest inside the six yard box before adding his fifth and our sixth of the evening four minutes later, again smashing into the far corner from ten yards for his 39th goal of the campaign.

The 22-year-old is also now our top goalscorer in a season, excelling Tommy Johnson’s 38 in 1928-29.

The striker also has 33 goals in 25 games in the Champions League, reaching the 30-goal milestone in fewer matches than any other player in the competition’s history.

De Bruyne curled in a wonderful seventh goal in stoppage time to add the cherry on top of the cake!  What a night at the Etihad!
