Ahead of welcoming Red Star Belgrade to the Etihad Stadium, Pep Guardiola confirmed City will be without three key players for our first Champions League game of the 2023/24 campaign.

John Stones, Jack Grealish and Mateo Kovacic will all be unavailable for selection. 

“I think they are getting better, they are not for tomorrow,”  said Guardiola. 

“Hopefully for Nottingham or next coming games because we need it because we have not a long squad in that moment. But it’s what it is.”

PEP GUARDIOLA PREVIEW

The boss addressed the media on Monday afternoon with the beginning of the fight for retaining the Champions League trophy on the horizon. 

And he anticipates our first European clash, against Red Star Belgrade, to be an exciting one having seen the type of football Barak Bakhar implements in the Serbian SuperLiga.

“Well I saw last season [he was] with Maccabi Haifa in a difficult group against Juventus, Benfica and PSG,” said Guardiola.

“What I saw, because we saw a little bit, my staff analyse what he has done with Maccabi Haifa against [Kylian] Mbappe, [Lionel] Messi and Neymar for example.

“Very impressed with the courage and bravery to play against them. Doesn’t matter what happened. We think tomorrow is going to be quite similar.” 

PREVIOUS MEETING

We’ve never had a competitive match against Red Star Belgrade, or any other Serbian side. 

However, Red Star are no strangers to meeting English sides in European competitions and they most recently inflicted a 2-0 defeat on Liverpool in 2018/19.

LAST TIME OUT

Our last Champions League match was that famous night in Istanbul in June, as we overcame Inter Milan to be crowned champions of Europe thanks to Rodrigo’s stunning strike.

In our last league encounter, goals from Jeremy Doku, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland secured a 3-1 victory over West Ham as we fought back from a half-time deficit to maintain our 100% record in the Premier League.
