Prior to kick-off, City supporters were treated to a beautiful display, where they were shown the Premier League, Emirates FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup trophies as the two teams entered the field of play.
Then a minute’s silence was observed, as City remembered the people lost this past year.
City 2-0 Sheffield United | Match report
Pep Guardiola’s men put the pressure on the Blades from the first whistle, and Rodrigo made the breakthrough on 14 minutes, picking up the ball from his deep, holding midfield position, driving at the Sheffield United defence before shooting across Wes Foderingham to find the back of the net.
Into the second half, City were intent on attacking for a second goal, and were galvanised by the Etihad crowd.
A second goal came just past the hour mark, as Phil Foden took the ball to the byline, pulled it across goal for Julian Alvarez to slide the ball in from a few yards out.
