Pep Guardiola’s men began in confident fashion, immediately putting the visitors on the back foot with some slick passing.
However, it was the Baggies who created the first big chance of the game through Karlan Grant, who cut in and fired towards goal from 12 yards, but Ederson was alert and pushed the ball to safety.
Slaven Bilic’s men remained compact and tight, until Joao Cancelo’s precise through ball found Raheem Sterling, who in turn picked out the on-rushing Ilkay Gundogan to sweep in the opener in the 30th minute from eight yards.
City looked to push on after breaking the deadlock, but the visitors hit back two minutes before the interval as Semi Ajayi’s scuffed effort deflected off Ruben Dias and into the net, the first goal conceded by Guardiola’s men in six and a half matches across all competitions.
We emerged from the break with a spring in our step, with Rodri and Jesus missing the target in quick succession.
Sergio Aguero then made a late cameo and fired wide from a good position, before Gundogan and Sterling were denied in stoppage time by wonderful saves from Sam Johnstone, earning his side a hard-fought point.
