Ederson has heaped praise on John Stones, describing him as “great centre-back with a huge heart”.

Stones has been in outstanding form this season, playing 17 times in all competitions and winning the Etihad Player of the Month for December after a string of fine performances.

We’ve conceded just four goals in our last 17 matches, with Stones excelling at centre-half with summer signing Ruben Dias during that period.

And the England man has also weighed in with three goals, including one that sent us on our way to a Carabao Cup semi-final victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Ederson has been impressed and says the way the 26-year-old has put his injury problems behind him should be applauded.

“He is a great centre-back,” the goalkeeper says.

“I have always liked him. He has a huge heart. I like him and I get along with him very well.

“I have always supported him and I’m delighted about his success. This season, I’m very happy for him for everything he has gone through, the injuries he suffered.

“I think he deserves everything. I hope he can enjoy this moment and he can carry on helping us until the end of the season.

“To me, it’s very important that they are focused, not only John Stones and Ruben Dias, but any player who plays as a centre-back.

“In the last few games, John and Ruben have been at a very good level. I’m very happy with their performance and the performance of our defensive line in general. I hope we can keep the same level in the future.”

Our run of 10 straight wins in all competitions has dramatically altered the dynamic of our season.

We have catapulted up the table and sit second, two points behind leaders Manchester United with a game in hand.

And we are also into the FA Cup fifth round and the Carabao Cup final.

Our defensive record has been key and, ahead of Tuesday’s crucial Premier League game at West Brom, Ederson feels a solid platform is vital if we are to end the season with silverware.

“A quote that I heard once is: ‘When you don’t concede goals, you are closer to win’. It’s true,” he said. “I think we have been working well defensively, we haven’t conceded many goals.

“At the beginning of the season, it was tough, we conceded five goals at home against Leicester City, but the team has worked hard since and our defensive line has been very solid this season. I’m happy for keeping clean sheets, but the main goal in this club is to win trophies.

“I think we are more solid, especially in defence. John Stones and Ruben Dias, who have been playing more times, have been incredible in this run.

“Also, the full-backs are at a great level, the midfielders as well. I think it’s not just the back four, the whole team has worked together defensively.

“All the credit to all my teammates for that. We work hard during the week to be able to perform well, sometimes the number of games can take its toll, but I think the team is on good momentum.

“Even when the team rotates and new players come in, the team keeps performing at a high level and playing good football. I think we are on the right path and in good momentum.”
