The Brazil international arrived at the Etihad Stadium in the summer of 2017 and has since gone on to establish himself as one of the finest goalkeepers operating in world football.
Ederson made the move to City armed with a reputation as one of the most exciting prospects in world football following an illustrious second spell with Benfica where he helped the Portuguese side to a league and cup double in 2016/17.
Thanks to his superb distribution allied to his natural goalkeeping quality, he was recruited by Pep Guardiola to take the reins at the Etihad with Brazilian signing a six-year contract.
A phenomenal maiden season in England saw Ederson record 16 clean sheets in the Premier League which helped City to become the first , and still only team, to record 100 points en route to the title.
Soon the personal accolades would follow his maiden major honours for City, who also won the Carabao Cup that season, as he was nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award in 2018 before further showcasing his importance to Guardiola’s side in 2018/19.
In a fierce battle with Liverpool to be crowned Premier League champions, Ederson’s 20 clean sheets proved decisive as City pipped the Anfield side to the title on the final day.
Not only was the shot-stopper crucial in our relentless pursuit of a second successive league crown, but he also saved a vital shootout penalty in the 2019 Carabao Cup final against Chelsea as we lifted the trophy at Wembley for a second successive season.
Those feats helped earn him a place in the 2019 PFA Team of the Year as he began to influence the role of a goalkeeper, not only in England, but around the world too as others in his position were encouraged to start playing out with their feet.
A first of three consecutive Golden Glove awards followed in 2019/20 with Ederson registering 16 shutouts before recording 19 the following season which helped City regain the title.
Ederson’s stellar campaign in 2021/22, as we once again locked horns with Liverpool for the title, earned special praise from Guardiola in May 2022.
The boss said: “We cannot have a better goalkeeper than Eddie.
“He suits perfectly our way [of playing]. The impact he has on the team is massive.
“His composure and the way he faces the good moments and bad moments is remarkable.
“He has incredible work ethic. We are lucky.”
In another nerve-jangling race for the crown, the Brazil international kept a stunning 20 clean sheets before we memorably came from behind to beat Aston Villa 3-2 on the final day of the season to lift the title.
His superb shutout tally saw him share the Golden Glove award with Alisson.
Consistently reliable, Ederson started the 2022/23 season in fantastic form which saw him included in Brazil’s squad for the 2022 World Cup.
It wouldn’t take long for our No.31 to reach another notable landmark when he became the quickest goalkeeper to record 100 Premier League clean sheets – achieving the feat in his 208th outing in England’s top flight in a 2-0 win over Newcastle.
In another enthralling title race, this time with Arsenal, Ederson proved an integral cog in our defensive system once more, keeping 11 clean sheets as City lifted a third successive Premier League title.
Ederson‘s exploits also helped City to FA Cup glory against Manchester United before he then showcased his world class talent on the grandest stage of all when we took on Internazionale in the 2023 Champions League in Istanbul.
Rodrigo’s goal had put City within touching distance of the prestigious crown and the Treble.
But, with time almost up, Ederson etched his name into Club folklore with two jaw-dropping saves including a point-blank save to keep out Romelu Lukaku’s goalbound header.
Since then, he’s added the UEFA Super Cup to his list of honours and, according to Guardiola, has transformed his game even further since the summer.
The boss explained: “He’s matured and he’s getting even better.
“We are a team that doesn’t concede too much and I have the feeling that when the opponents arrive he is there.”
In total, the Brazilian has won 14 major honours during his time with the Club while winning 23 caps for his nation.
Congratulations Ederson on another wonderful landmark for City!
