City duo James Trafford and Cole Palmer both started as England Under-21s maintained their 100% record at EURO 2023 with a 2-0 victory over Germany.

The Young Lions entered the match with top spot in Group C, and qualification for the knockout stages, already secured after wins over Czech Republic (2-0) and Israel (2-0).

And having played the entirety of the successive victories, sky blue defender Taylor Hardwood-Bellis was rested for the final group match among the substitutes.

After drawing one and losing one of their opening two matches, Germany needed three points to give themselves any chance of reaching the last-16.

But it was Lee Carsley’s side who made the perfect start when Aston Villa pair Jacob Ramsey and Cameron Archer combined, allowing the former calmly slide the ball into the net after driving into the area.

Midway through the first half, one became two, as the Young Lions ignited an exhilarating counter attack which allowed Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott to charge from the halfway line into the final third before firing home.

City’s Trafford had been one of England’s heroes of the tournament so far, keeping successive clean sheets at before the final group game, and he was at his best again on 23 minutes when tipping behind a goal-bound Kevin Schade header.

The second half proved rather routine for Carsley’s players who were able to maintain possession comfortably with Germany rarely threatening the City ‘keeper’s goal.

Trafford has now played three games in Georgia, won three and maintained three clean sheets.

England will next face Portugal in the last-16 on Sunday 2 July, with kick-off at Ramaz Shengalia Stadium scheduled for 17:00 (UK).
