Haaland hit a hat-trick in the first half and a brace after the break as Pep Guardiola’s men made it through to the quarter-finals of the competition we’re defending this season.
The star striker’s tally this evening in the 6-2 win put him alongside Frank Roberts and Bobby Marshall for most goals by one player in a single FA Cup game.
Roberts scored five in February 1926’s 11-4 fifth round win over Crystal Palace while Marshall hit five in January 1930’s 10-1 fourth round replay victory over Swindon Town - both at Maine Road.
Denis Law did score six goals, ironically at Luton in 1961, but they were wiped from the records.
Unfortunately, with 69 minutes on the clock, torrential rain meant the referee had no option but to abandon the game with the score at 6-2.
Worse still, City lost the re-arranged fixture 3-1 with Law scoring the goal and his incredible feat in the first game was wiped from the records!
Haaland did this evening also become the first City player ever to score five goals in a single game twice.
His other quintet came against RB Leipzig as we defeated Marco Rose’s men 7-0 in the Champions League Round of 16 on the way to our first-ever success in that competition in 2022/23.
He’s also the first player to score five or more goals in an FA Cup match for a top-division club since George Best netted six for Manchester United against Northampton Town in 1970.
The first four of Haaland’s goals against the Hatters were set up by Kevin De Bruyne in a sensational performance by the midfield playmaker.
The last time one player set up another for four goals was Harry Kane who assisted Son Heung-min in September 2020’s 5-2 win for Tottenham at Southampton.
