City face FC Barcelona at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando this week as we continue our preparations for the upcoming 2024/25 season.

The Premier League champions come up against one of the other giants of European football in a 00:00 (UK) kick-off on Wednesday 30 July.

It’s available to watch live with a CITY+ subscription in selected countries, while our Matchday Centre and post-match highlights mean you won’t miss any of the key action on mancity.com or our official app.

How to watch City’s US Tour matches

The links between the clubs are plentiful and obvious, with manager Pep Guardiola, Director of Football Txiki Begiristain and Chief Executive Ferran Soriano all enjoying successful careers in Catalonia before moving to Manchester.

Here we take a look at those who have represented both teams on the pitch…

Ilkay Gundogan

The former City captain is forever a Club legend having led us to the historic 2022/23 Treble.

Guardiola’s first signing at City when he arrived in 2016, Gundogan grew into his role at the Etihad Stadium to eventually become one of the most important men in the most successful era in our Club’s history.

A beautifully elegant passer whose calm nature can hide his innate determination to win every single game he plays, Gundogan scored some crucial goals including the Premier League title clincher against Aston Villa in 2022 and a spectacular brace of volleys in the 2023 FA Cup final.

The German international left Manchester for Barcelona in 2023, spending his first season as one of Xavi’s most trusted lieutenants.

Leila Ouahabi

City’s defender spent the first years of her career at Barcelona before a further six seasons between 2016 and 2022 when she made the move to the Joie Stadium.

During that time, she hoovered up five league titles, seven domestic cups and the 2020/21 Champions League.

Now, she’s a regular in Gareth Taylor’s title-chasing City side – playing 47 times in her first two seasons.

Yaya Toure

Truly one of the driving forces behind City’s re-emergence at the top table of European football, Yaya Toure came to City from Barcelona primarily as a defensive midfielder in 2010.

Roberto Mancini gave him permission to start and join in attacks, instead entrusting the likes of Gareth Barry and Nigel de Jong to sweep up behind him.

It saw Toure become one of the Premier League’s outstanding midfielders, with 24 goals for Manuel Pellegrini’s title winners in 2013/14 particularly noteworthy.

Keira Walsh

Born and bred in Greater Manchester, Walsh was earmarked early on as a special talent.

She’s gone on to prove that prediction right, running City and England’s midfield for several years before heading over to Catalonia in 2022.

There she’s played 77 times in two seasons for Europe’s dominant team in women’s football, winning the Champions League in both seasons.

Lucy Bronze

Attacking right-back Bronze had two spells at City between 2014 and 2017 and 2020 to 2022.

Over that time she was integral in five major honours for the Club and became widely regarded as one of the best players in the world.

In 2022, she joined Walsh in moving to Barcelona where the pair have lifted successive Champions Leagues.

Bronze is now back in the WSL with Chelsea.

Joao Cancelo

Portuguese international Cancelo was reinvented under Pep Guardiola from a right-back into a left-back that could control the play by moving into a more central position.

He’s played 154 times for City and was a big part of the first three titles in our current record breaking run of four.

He went on loan to Bayern Munich for the second half of the 2022/23 campaign before another loan at Barcelona last season, where he played 42 times.

Sergio Aguero

City’s record goalscorer and a true Club icon, Aguero joined us in 2011 and ended his first season in Manchester with perhaps the most famous goal in our history.

He spent 10 years at City, scoring 260 goals in 390 appearances and winning 14 major honours before he joined Barcelona.

His Camp Nou stay was much shorter than anticipated, when he was advised by doctors to retire from the game due to an irregular heartbeat.

Aguero’s achievements for City have received permanent recognition, with a statue of the Argentine between Vincent Kompany and David Silva in front of the East Stand at the Etihad Stadium.

Claudio Bravo

Chilean goalkeeper Bravo had already had a lengthy career in La Liga with Real Sociedad when Barcelona made the move in 2014.

There he spent two years in rotation with Marc Andre ter Stegen before Pep Guardiola made a new goalkeeper a priority upon arrival at City.

Bravo was the man entrusted with that role and after early struggles, settled into English football.

Ederson came to City in 2017, with Bravo largely tasked with cup games. However, he still grabbed some attention with several star turns in penalty shootouts on the way to Carabao Cup and Community Shield successes.

Geovanni

A dynamic, creative attacking midfielder, Geovanni moved to Europe for Barcelona in 2001 after initially shining at Cruzeiro in his native Brazil.

He played 41 times in two seasons there, before four productive years at Benfica and a brief stint back with Cruzeiro.

Sven Goran-Eriksson brought him to City as one of several exciting introductions in 2007 and although he only stayed for one season, a fierce strike in the home Manchester derby lives on in the minds of all City fans.

Ferran Torres

Arriving at City as an exciting 20-year-old winger in 2020, Torres spent two years at the Etihad – playing 43 games and scoring 16 goals.

Undoubtedly his most eye-catching performance came in the 4-3 win over Newcastle United, when Torres scored a hat-tick including an audacious backheel finish.

He left for Barcelona in 2022, where he has scored 25 goals in 113 appearances.

Toni Duggan

One of our first signings when our women’s team was professionalised, Duggan was a versatile attacker capable of some truly exceptional moments.

She hit 37 goals in 80 games for City between 2014 and 2017, including a key role in the 2016 WSL title, before a busy two years at Barcelona saw her play 72 matches and score 29 times.

Eric Garcia

Joining City from Barcelona’s famed La Masia youth setup, Garcia made the move into senior football in Manchester.

He played 35 times, with 20 appearances in 2019/20 the standout, before returning to Barcelona in 2021. He played 68 times in the following two seasons before spending 2023/24 on loan at Girona.

Sylvinho

Having already enjoyed a long career with Corinthians, Arsenal and Celta Vigo, Sylvinho joined Barcelona in 2004 and played an important role in their return to the peak of the game in Europe.

After being part of the Champions League winning squad in 2008/09, he moved to City for a season to complete his professional career.

He played 15 times in total for the Blues.

Nolito

After starting in the lower leagues in Spain, Nolito got his move to Barcelona at 21.

There he mostly represented the B side, save for five appearances in the first team, before he moved on.

39 goals across three seasons for Celta Vigo impressed Pep Guardiola in 2016. The Spanish winger played 30 times and scored six goals for City in his only term in Manchester.

Vicky Losada

Catalan through and through, Losada spent 12 years in the first team at her childhood club across two spells.

She joined City in 2021, spending two years as part of Gareth Taylor’s squad before moving on to Roma and now to Brighton.

Ronnie Ekelund

An attacking midfielder or forward, Ekelund impressed Barcelona at the 1992 Olympics and subsequently spent two years with the Catalan giants.

His gametime for the first team was limited and so he set off on a string of loans, including one to City in 1995/96, playing six times across December and January.
