The Brazilian, who was making his 100th appearance in the competition, was named Man of the Match by UEFA after a commanding performance in the centre of the pitch.
Having been an unused substitute in the Manchester derby, Fernandinho was recalled for the visit of Sporting and impressed in the anchorman role he has perfected, using the ball well and providing plenty of steel when City were out of possession.
It was a typically assured display from the 36-year-old, who captained the side as he became only the fourth Brazilian to reach a century of Champions League appearances, behind Dani Alves, Roberto Carlos and Marcelo.
Fernandinho is up against Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, Milan Skriniar of Inter and Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema for the award.
