Foden, who was named the Player of the Match after a lively display in Germany, was overjoyed after adding to his Champions League tally.

“It’s very satisfying to score in the biggest competition. It’s always a delight for me,” he said.

“It’s something for me to add on now, keep scoring goals, I think it’s important.

“We know what they’re about. The last time we played them, we were very good in the first half then they came out in the second half and performed.

“At half time the manager said we have to be ready because they will come out firing.

“They scored an early goal which wasn’t ideal, but the way the team reacted and the way we controlled the game, it was an unbelievable display today.

“The last two games were not ideal for us. We’ve come off the back of two rubbish results.

“Today we had to make that right. We definitely did that. The way we performed throughout the full game was a delight to watch so I’m really happy.”

Pep Guardiola‘s second-half substitutes had the desired effect, with both Alvarez and Doku coming on to score the crucial goals that take us top of Group G with six points after two games, with 18-year-old Lewis also playing a starring role.

Foden reserved special praise for both compatriot Lewis and Alvarez after the victory.

“Julian has been top this season. His goal was magical. He’s scoring a lot of goals.  He’s someone we look to for big goals this season.

“I’m happy for him because he came on and changed the game. He’s a really important player for us.

“Lewis was brilliant today in midfield. He broke a lot of lines. Rico has the courage to play at such a young age.

“I’m really happy for him. It’s nice to have an Academy player on the pitch with me today so yeah I’m happy for him.”
