Phil Foden has praised Manchester City's courage as Pep Guardiola's men claimed our first victory at Anfield since 2003 with a sensational 4-1 Premier League win.

Ilkay Gundogan netted a brace either side of Mohamed Salah’s equaliser just after the hour mark, before a goal each from Raheem Sterling and Foden sealed a fantastic three points for City in Merseyside.

The visitors hadn’t won at Anfield since 2003 and Foden feels that City showed their fearlessness, tenacity and determination throughout the encounter.

“We showed our courage from minute one,” he said. “They played a brilliant game and made it difficult for us.

“We did well to play our football and keep going. We kept playing our game and in the end it paid off. Every player wants to play in a big game like this.

“I think it was definitely better in the second half. It’s something to work on to try and start well in every game that we can.”

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker was at the centre of attention as his two errors led directly to City’s second and third goals, but Foden believes that credit should go to himself and his teammates for making those errors possible.

“We definitely forced the errors,” he reflected. “It’s something we worked on in training to press from the front and you see the rewards in games like today. Everyone worked for each other today.”

The 20-year-old became the youngest ever player to score and assist in a Premier League game at Anfield against Liverpool and he was pleased with his ferocious strike with seven minutes remaining, his tenth goal in all competitions this season for City.

“I struck it perfect, I’m happy to see it go in and to have helped the team. I enjoy it you know [playing false 9]. I like it, it’s not like you have to stay up front, you can drop in and get involved.

“I try to play there as best as I can and it’s something I need to learn. I enjoyed it, coming in and linking play in the final third.”

The victory takes City ten points ahead of Liverpool and five points ahead of second-placed Manchester United, whilst Guardiola‘s side still have a game in hand.

Foden feels this win could be the perfect result to propel City to the league title.

“This gives us every chance of going and winning it now. The job isn’t done and there’s still a long way to go. We need to keep doing this and putting the points on the table. Hopefully, we can go on and get it done. It only helps us a lot by winning here.

“When you beat the champions everyone’s confidence goes up, we haven’t won here in a bit so we’re just happy to win.”
