Seconds before the interval, City made it two as Bernardo Silva poked beyond David De Gea after another accurate Cancelo delivery.
City limited the hosts to just one shot on target in the entire match and Foden believes that every player played their part in the win.
“I think we had the game of our lives today,” he said. “Everything went right for us. We dominated the match from start to finish which is really good.
“It was the possession and picking the right times to hurt them. I’m really pleased.
“Me and Gabby [Jesus] got told to press their wingbacks. Then we had Bernardo [Silva] and Kevin [De Bruyne] pressing high too, so yeah it worked.
“We knew we could exploit the space in behind, we picked the right times to do it. On another day, I could have finished my chance.”
The victory takes City back into second place in the top-flight for the time being at least, and the Englishman admitted the importance of bouncing back from the home defeat to Crystal Palace last time out.
“It was very important to get back to winning ways in the league today,” he said. “United are a great team and a difficult team to play against, we showed our class today.
