City Women’s head coach Gareth Taylor says it would be ‘great’ if City were to lift the maiden UEFA Super Cup of our illustrious history.

Pep Guardiola’s side booked our place in the prestigious showpiece after monumentally winning the Champions League to close a spectacular 2022/23 campaign.

Not only did the triumph secure the Treble, it also meant we will lock horns with Sevilla at Greece’s Karaiskakis Stadium on Wednesday 16 August at 20:00 (UK).

The reigning Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup champions enter the tie buoyed after opening our 2023/24 league campaign with a superb 3-0 win away at Burnley.

With only five days between our win at Turf Moor and the Super Cup final, matches are already coming and thick and fast at the beginning of the term.

But Taylor believes there’s no better time to play in a fixture with silverware at stake.

Speaking on our Matchday Live broadcast for the victory over the Clarets he declared: “It would be great [for City to win the UEFA Super Cup].

“It’s a trophy we’ve not seen from City, so it would be amazing if they can do it. I think it is really important.

“Games are coming thick and fast, but I think it’s a good time for this team, in the moment that they are, to play in this game.

“Again, it’s not going to change the view on what we think but it would be really nice [to win it].

“Regardless of the result, it’s not going to change what we think but it would be really nice for them to get their hands on another trophy.”

Both Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol made their City debuts in the victory over Burnley following their summer arrivals from Chelsea and RB Leipzig, respectively.

The versatile midfielder played 67 minutes and the commanding defender played over 10 minutes at Turf Moor with both impressing as we recorded a clean sheet in the Premier League curtain raiser.

And Taylor was impressed by their bows in sky blue.

He added: “Kovacic is a very good player as we spoke about before the game and Gvardiol, as well, we probably didn’t expect him to come in.

“Good players can player anywhere. He’s bright, intelligent and he got forward on a few occasions as well.”
