The Manchester City managed received the plaudit, which is awarded to the coach who is adjudged to have made the most impact on British sport, in the wake of an incredible year that saw him guide the Club to a historic Treble before then going to claim the UEFA Super Cup.
Guardiola first led City to a third consecutive Premier League title as claimed the 2022/23 crown to register what was our fifth title in six years.
The Catalan then oversaw a memorable 2-1 FA Cup final triumph over Manchester United at Wembley in what was the first ever all-Manchester cup final.
And a remarkable campaign was then capped seven days later in Istanbul as Guardiola’s City overcame Inter 1-0 to claim a first-ever UEFA Champions League crown – and so seal the Treble.
In the process City became only the second English club to achieve the feat of winning the league, cup and Champions League in a single season.
More silverware then followed in August when Guardiola guided City to UEFA Super Cup success as we overcame Sevilla in a penalty shoot-out in Athens after the sides had drawn 1-1.
That triumph in Greece made it 15 major trophies in all during the Catalan’s remarkable Etihad tenure with Guardiola having also received universal praise and admiration for the way he has ushered in a sea change in the way the game is played in England.
And there could yet be more silverware for Pep and City before the year is out with the Club currently competing in the FIFA Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia.
The BBC gong is just the latest in a series of prestigious awards bestowed on the 52-year-old with Pep having also been named as UEFA Men’s Coach of the Year, the LMA Manager of the Year, the Premier League Manager of the Year and is also on the shortlist for the FIFA Best Men’s Coach of the Year prize.
Commenting on the prize, Pep said: “It is such a huge honour to have won this award.
“Like all coaches in every sport, the reason we are recognised is because we won so much as a team. The players, the coaches, the physios, the staff, it is thanks to all of them that I am presented with this award.
“What the players achieved on the pitch last season, this incredible Treble, was a huge success for everyone at the Club and especially for our fans. I want to thank everyone for what they did to help us achieve what we did this year.”
It was a memorable night for City with Erling Haaland also named as the 2023 BBC World Sport Star of the Year and City won the Team of the Year.
Everyone at Manchester City would like to send their congratulations to Pep on this well-deserved award.
