Pep Guardiola has urged his players not to ‘waste energy’ dwelling on the derby defeat to Manchester United – and instead focus on the upcoming encounter with Tottenham.

Guardiola was frustrated with the 2-1 loss, of course – and the controversial offside decision that started the comeback for the hosts at Old Trafford.

But he wants his team to now look ahead to Thursday’s next big Premier League encounter, as we welcome Antonio Conte’s team.

He said: “I said to the players – don’t waste energy thinking what happened. Focus on Spurs.

“I would not say we win or lose for this action [the controversial first goal]. Of course, it was involved – an important one.

“But wasting energy thinking about what happened in the past, you are in the next game.

“The best thing to do is analyse the things we have done good, what we can improve and then focus on Spurs. Now it is done. It is gone.”

Despite the defeat, Guardiola was impressed with the way his players showed ‘personality’ and went about the challenge of the 189th Manchester derby.

He said: “The game was really good. We played really good.

“First half, we start really well, control really well. But we were not in the right position just in case we lose the ball to avoid their run.

“In the second half, we adjust and it was brilliant.

“It was quite a similar game like we played many times here. We perform and behave in our best.

“We missed a little bit up front the quality, sometimes that happens, that is not the problem, the problem is not behave like we did a few days ago in Southampton, today was completely different – like we are.

“I congratulate the team. I am proud to come here and play with this personality.”

It was 0-0 at the break following a cagey opening 45 minutes.

But City came on strong in the second period and took the lead through substitute Jack Grealish on the hour mark.

It was thoroughly deserved, with the sky blues starting to move through the gears.

The game eventually turned when Bruno Fernandes equalised but the assistant referee flagged Marcus Rashford offside in the build-up.

However, referee Stuart Attwell overturned the decision and awarded the goal on 78 minutes before Rashford won it for the Red Devils on 84 minutes after prodding home a Alejandro Garnacho cross from the left.

The manager, discussing the vital leveller, added: “Rashford [is] offside, Bruno Fernandes no, intervene Rashford or not, [he] distract our keeper and distract our central defenders.”

The result means we remain in second spot, five points behind leaders Arsenal.

Guardiola stressed he’s not looking at the title race right now and is instead focusing on the level of performance from his team as they aimed to up their game following the disappointing display at Southampton.

He added: “It’s about performance. Today we performed.

“We can’t be distracted now by what happened with the first goal and now focus on Spurs in a few days.”
