For many Manchester City fans, loving the club was a conscious decision, whilst for some others, including 24-year-old Harry Newton, supporting the club was a requirement.

To put it into his own words, “there was no alternative” for him but to support City and it’s something that the local lad appreciates massively.

Harry’s father ensured that his son’s allegiance was clear from a young age and the pair have never looked back since!

“I’d like to say I had two paths set in front of me between United and City, and I chose City despite being the underdogs...but my dad would have disowned me if I wasn’t a blue,” he said humorously.

“There was no alternative. Despite the hard times at the start, I stuck with the blues and put up with the aggravation at school and on the pitch.

“My mates were shouting Wayne Rooney while firing a shot in, meanwhile I was shouting Samaraaaas!

“I’ve always enjoyed following City - when it was tough, we’d just have a laugh and a sing-song, and take it all on the chin.

“My earliest City memory was a friendly against TNS at The City of Manchester Stadium,” he recalls. “I jumped up as part of the Mexican Wave, only seven years old, elated! Only to then sit back down...on to the floor!

“Weirdly one of my favourite seasons was the Stuart Pearce low-scoring season, simply because it’s the year I got into football the most and I used to love turning up and cheering on the Blues.”

CITY+ | Free to watch until football returns

Harry, who grew up in Denton, just a 15 minute drive away from the Etihad Stadium, feels that the tradition of supporting City in his family has to continue for the foreseeable future.

Asked if he would encourage new members of his family to support the club, his answer was crystal clear.

“Encourage? They’d have no other choice! You’re born a blue,” he said.

“Now we’re winning and a much better side than that I grew up watching, I’m glad we’ve still kept our heads and our sense of humour!

“There’s no sense of entitlement, and every day feels like a bonus.”
