Ilkay Gundogan has been named German Football Ambassador 2022.

The City star and hero of our final day Premier League title success against Aston Villa claimed the public vote, beating out stern competition of ten other German players.

The award, celebrating its 10th anniversary, recognises footballers who have shown great sporting success and/or social commitment abroad, and who have contributed to Germany’s positive image in the world.

Though he was unable to attend the event in person due to his City commitments, Gundogan expressed his sincere gratitude for the honour, which he received in person whilst on international duty.

Ever humble and generous, the midfielder opted to use the funds to support Manchester charity Community Integrated Care.

“I would like to thank everyone who voted for me to be the German Football Ambassador 2022 and I feel this is a great honour,” he declared. “Thank you very much!”

He added on Twitter: “I’ve decided to use the fund to support Community Integrated Care in Manchester, who work to provide social and health support to disadvantaged people.

“We must never forget those in need!”

Gundogan has enjoyed a glittering career in both Germany and England, lifting three trophies with Borussia Dortmund and clinching 11 pieces of silverware with City, earning plenty of deserved individual acclaim along the way.

Off-the-pitch, he also strives to make a positive difference, partaking in several charitable endeavours, such as his campaign to help local Manchester businesses and visits to social care charities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He and Aymeric Laporte have also agreed to donate 1000 meals to foodbanks across Manchester with a friendly wager depending the outcome of the World Cup clash between Germany and Spain.

Congratulations, Ilkay!
