Ilkay Gundogan is using his memorable run to the Champions League final with Borussia Dortmund as motivation as he tries to do the same with Manchester City.

The midfielder was an integral member of the Dortumund side which finished runners-up in 2013, scoring in the showpiece game before Arjen Robben’s last minute goal consigned them to an agonising 2-1 defeat against rivals Bayern Munich.

However, the journey to the final was particularly thrilling, with a last gasp win in the quarter-final preceding a famous victory over Real Madrid in the last four.

Despite losing the deciding game, they are fond memories that Gundogan carries with him today.

“For me personally the Champions League has always been something very special,” he said ahead of City’s quarter-final against Olympique Lyonnais.

“I’ve already played a final in 2013, but I lost with Dortmund in the last minute. I still think about that season very often and I will give my very best to repeat reaching the final again.

“But you also need a bit of luck for it - that luck what we didn’t have last season against Spurs, for example.”

Like City, Lyon are bidding to reach the semi-finals of the competition for the second time, having last reached this stage 10 years ago.

Pep Guardiola’s side have been installed as favourites by some, but Gundogan is refusing to pay attention to such views having been impressed by the Ligue One outfit’s displays against Juventus in the last 16.

“Lyon will be highly motivated,” added the 29-year-old.

“It is a huge chance for them to reach the semi-finals in just 90 minutes. They have nothing to lose.

“It doesn’t matter to us that everybody is saying we are the big favourite - Juventus was the big favourite too, but Lyon showed what they are capable of in two games.

“I’m not already thinking about a possible semi-final yet and it is really not possible to say what will happen in the other games as well.

“We’re feeling very focused as there is absolutely no distraction here in Lisbon - and it is only the Champions League tournament left - no Premier League or anything else.”
