The Club captain will leave the Etihad Stadium for a new challenge and leaves an incredible legacy after seven years in Manchester.
The Germany international has lifted 14 major honours since he was announced as the first signing of the Pep Guardiola era.
Far from a player than can be defined solely by his statistics, the midfielder has been a model of consistency on the pitch and professionalism off it.
His calm, considered nature made him the obvious pick for the captaincy by his team-mates upon Fernandinho’s departure last summer.
His role within the team has changed considerably throughout his career, whether sitting deepest in midfield or pushing forward into forward areas.
The sheer will to win was most typified by both his late brace to seal the 2021/22 Premier League success and the pair of volleys that beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final earlier this month.
Here we’ll try to capture some of Gundogan‘s impact through the numbers his City career produced...
304
The midfielder played 304 times for City during his seven seasons in Manchester.
In total, that meant 21,154 minutes on the pitch from 234 starts.
That comprised of 188 Premier League appearances, 67 in the Champions League, 24 in the FA Cup, 21 in the League Cup and four Community Shields.
His first season was heavily affected by injury, meaning he played just 16 times.
However, he was at his best in 2017/18 with 48 games across all competitions.
50 appearances came in both 2018/19 and 2019/20 before 46 in 2020/21.
43 matches followed in 2021/22 and finally came 51 as captain in 2022/23.
13
The final trophy we won with Gundogan was one which he was integral to.
He played all 13 games in the 2022/23 Champions League as we went all the way to glory in Istanbul.
Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva were the only other City players to feature in every game on that run, but Gundogan‘s 997 minutes was more than both of those.
His passing was central to our play throughout the competition, especially those that cut through opposition defensive lines.
Opta’s line-breaking passes metric, which means it gets beyond players and progresses his team towards the goal, says Gundogan completed 61 incisive balls in the final third.
11 of those passes saw him slice through the last line of defence, the third most in our squad, and six led directly to chances - only bettered by Kevin De Bruyne.
60
Gundogan scored 60 times for Manchester City.
Deployed in a number of roles by Pep Guardiola, the goals came in ebbs and flows. In total, he had 465 shots for the Blues.
Four of the most memorable came in two games, with his doubles against Aston Villa in 2021/22 and Manchester United in 2022/23 set to go down in City history.
His best scoring campaign came in 2020/21 when he played in a key role in bringing the Premier League title back to the Etihad Stadium with 13 league strikes and a further three in the Champions League and one in the FA Cup.
He hit 11 in the campaign just finished to mark his second best season in front of goal after 10 in 2021/22.
Before that, he had scored five in 2016/17 and 2019/20 and six in 2017/18 and 2018/19.
14
Gundogan lifted 14 major honours for City.
He is one of the most decorated players in the Club’s history having been present during the most trophy laden era we have ever known.
The No.8 lifted the Premier League five times in seven seasons supplemented by four League Cups, two FA Cups, two Community Shields and the famous Champions League win earlier this month.
37
Gundogan clocked 37 assists for City according to Opta. That figure comes from a total of 396 chances created.
The Germany international was part of every phase of Pep Guardiola‘s structure, playing the last pass on 40 occasions.
His best Premier League campaign in terms of finding team-mates was 2022/23, with five assists. He got an extra two in the Champions League. That haul of seven matched his 2017/18 output.
However, it was his eight assists in 2018/19 - including four in six FA Cup games - that represented his best season in this particular metric.
15,821
No one has completed more passes for City since Gundogan‘s arrival than the Germany international.
His 15,821 passes puts him 699 ahead of team-mate Kyle Walker, who arrived a year after Gundogan.
9,443 of those came in the Premier League with 3,666 played in the Champions League. Overall, his pass completion rate was 91.3%.
