Joao Cancelo has welcomed the addition of new signing Sergio Gomez to the City squad and believes the Spanish full-back has only added to the quality at Pep Guardiola’s disposal.

A highly regarded attacking left-back who began his career at Barcelona’s famed La Masia Academy, Gomez has moved to City from Belgian side Anderlecht and signed a four-year contract.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s Premier League trip to Newcastle United, Guardiola confirmed that Gomez would be part of the squad that travels to St James’ Park.

For his part meanwhile, Cancelo is in no doubt as the quality the 21-year-old’s addition to City’s defensive options will bring.

And he said having such fierce competition for places was the hallmark of a successful side.

“Spanish players always have talent and he has great qualities,” Cancelo declared.

“He comes from FC Barcelona Academy, so there isn’t much more you need to add.

“We have competition in all the positions in the squad. The best teams in the world need it to be always up there.

“I want competition in my position too, because it makes you a better player and it makes him a better player.

“I think the quality of the team is going to increase thanks to the competitivity.”

A key component in our back-to-back title wins over the past two seasons, Cancelo has proved equally adept at either playing at right back or left back and has also been deployed in midfield to great effect too.

Cancelo has started the 2022/23 campaign in outstanding form and, so far, has been deployed on the left side of our defence in our opening two league victories.

And he said he was more than happy to fit in to help the needs of the team and where manager Pep Guardiola asks him to be deployed.

“I feel very well. I always try to adapt to every position the manager puts me and give my best for the team,” the Portuguese international added.

“I’m always adapting well to play both on the right and the left. I think with the number of quality players we have in our squad, it makes it easier to adapt to any position on the pitch.

“Some games Pep asked me to play more inside, other games more outside.

“It depends on how the opponents press. I always try to give my best so my teammates can also show their talent and we can get the wins.”
